Who?
Current and future health care professionals, student allies, and community members throughout California. The event is organized by CALA, the California Alliance for Legislative Action.
What?
Convince our California legislators that our healthcare system is need of reform, and we need SB840, the bill that will establish universal healthcare via a statewide single-payer healthcare system. More information on SB 840.
When & Where?
Join us on Monday, January 12, 2007 in Sacramento. We will leave Los Angeles on Sunday, January 11 and return to Los Angeles on Monday evening. Rough schedule to come.
Why?
To demand that our state lawmakers address the crisis affecting the health care system and the 6.6 million who are uninsured in California. Both the Senate and the Assembly have passed this bill, before the Governor vetoed it. Find out how your legislators voted, from our SB 840 page. We are 3 Senate votes and 9 Assembly votes away from a veto-proof margin! "If not us, then who? If not now, then when?" John Lewis, activist in Civil Rights Movement

California Alliance for Legislative Action for Universal HealthCare (CALAUHC)
"'CALA' stands for 'California Alliance for Legislative Action.' In response to the growing number of medically-uninsured and underinsured residents of California, CALA was founded in the summer of 2005 by California medical students affiliated with the American Medical Students Association (AMSA), originally to support a state Senate bill proposing the implementation of statewide single-payer health insurance (California Health Insurance Reliability Act, designated SB840). Led by Renu Tipirneni of the UCSF School of Medicine and Parker Duncan of the UCI School of Medicine, CALA quickly grew into a collaboration of dedicated medical and pre-medical students from nearly all California universities."
Senator Shiela Kuehl's site on SB840 and California health policy
"SB 840, the California Universal Healthcare Act, is California’s plan to establish a system of health insurance to cover all residents of the state with comprehensive benefits, stabilize growth in health care spending, improve the quality of care and guarantee the right of every Californian to choose his or her own physician."
California Physicians Alliance (CaPA)
State chapter of the Physicians for a National Health Program focused on health care reform and bringing single-payer health care to California
One Care Now
"The California OneCareNow Campaign is the nation's first-ever statewide grassroots campaign for universal health insurance."
Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP)
A nonprofit organization of 14,000 physicians, medical students and health professionals who support single-payer national health insurance.
California Student Physicians for Healthcare Reform (CSPHR)
"As future physicians and healthcare professionals, we are committed to reforming the present system so that everyone will have access to comprehensive, high quality healthcare."
American Medical Student Association (AMSA) - Universal Health Care Initiative
"Universal health care refers to the idea that every American should have access to affordable, high-quality health care." Many educational resources to help understand and take action on this issue.
